October 16′ Army NG Drill: APFT and Chill

 JPEG_20151024_142711

This October 2016 drill overall was one of the most relaxed drills I’ve had in a while. It was a two day drill and we started with the annual APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test) my whole sub section passed, which is awesome. I don’t have to worry about my officers breathing down my neck about it. I did really well scoring a 280/300. CrossFit has really helped maintain my fitness as I was able to run a sub 14min two mile which puts my run time 4th in our company.
After the APFT we did much of nothing. This year we’re having a winter annual training up north, so we was going to go over CBRNE raid and disposal scenarios. But it rained all day Saturday after the APFT and Sunday and the leadership didn’t want to get everything dirty since we will be leaving in December for annual training. The air assault infantry already called dibs on the drill hall, so we just basically sat around in the barracks studying our RECON pamphlets and did gave out information for our plane tickets.

Next month is a MUTA 8 drill (4 days) and it should be good one. We’re going to range to qualify with our individual’s weapons, so we have more time for field operations for annual training. Then we pack everything up for the C130 ride to winter wonderland. It’s already snowing there just waiting for us southerners. Thank god we don’t have to sleep in the field!

And sorry mom I couldn’t travel back and be with you for your 60th birthday weekend. Hopefully, we can go to beach next time around!

March Army NG Drill: 1 day, no sweat

image

M4s

This month drill was only for one day. We did a sensitive items count, and loaded everything up to be sent off for maintenance, and calibration. We should be getting it all back next weekend.

Next weekend should be pretty more kinetic. As we prep for the FTX that’s coming up this annual training starting in June.

My 1st proposal to bring stem cell research to my uni!

image

Above is the 1st page of 46 that makes up my proposal to start doing stem cell research at my work.  I’ve been working on it since December gathering all the facts I need to pitch this to the research department.

I have high hopes for this to get implemented, but like anything else, I sometimes get doubts. The budget is way more than the other projects we currently have going on here, so I’m hopeing they’re not going to get turned off by the cost. There’s plenty resources that would help us fund for this research. Other thing is you may of heard about the controversy around stem cells. You can create artificial stem cells without harvesting them for embryos, but Texas is a very conservative state. Politics may shoot my proposal down before it even have a chance. I believe the majority on the research board wouldn’t think like that, and it won’t be a factor. Lastly, I have a bachelor’s degree, and not a PhD. Top it off I haven’t been working here for a year yet. They may look at me and say I’m naive because I’m still pretty new, and the whole nine yards. The content of my proposal should silence the no-sayers on that issue.

I always overhear conversations changing the direction of the research here to be more ambitious. Even if my proposal fail, I believe it will get nging our approach  on the matter. Dr. Bennett looked over it and said I should definitely submit it, so by the end of this week it shall be done.

A huge thank you to my parents. They emailed, texted, and called me everyday to keep developing this proposal. I maybe live 9hrs away, but the support haven’t changed since I was a dorky 6 year old with my crazy ambitions. Also, thank you Bella, Clay, Anna, Rosilia, Liz, Jamie, Allie, Dr. Bennett, Dr. Lawson, Terrance, Terrell, Pat, Ju, Stephanie, Dr. Williams, and Jared for your direct support during all of this. I may be going overboard on the thank you, but I appreciate you guys!

February Army Drill: zzzZZzzzzZZZZz

image

Welp. This month was nowhere near as exciting last month, but we still got allot accomplished. We serviced our pro masks, paperwork and briefings, and a quick night time land nav course.

We did get some great news though. We will be getting the new pro masks for awhile to train with, and we’re prepping for FTX: Knight Dragon. Knight Dragon is going to be an live fire exercise with our cav scouts. Mission is to break and secure CBRN weapons stored in a reinforced complex.

Transferring to this unit was a great decision. Texas have a huge budget and I’m with other CBRN soldiers and not the solo CBRN nco. Been awhile since I got excited for upcoming drills!

Thirsty Thursdays! A little bar hopping

image

Jamie & Rebecca

Jamie’s week been pretty hectic, so we decided to go bar hopping tonight. I think it’s something we both needed. Her boss is pressing a lot from her lately. She have to pick up the slack until her employer hire another chem engineer. I’ve been busy with crossfit, working full time at the university doing research, and taking on two classes in grad school. Times like this is needed, even if it’s only for two hours.

I feel really relax sitting in bed right now waiting on Jamie to come to bed. Still debating if I should go to crossfit at 5:30am like I always do or sleep in and go into work at 9am. Love you guys. I’ll blog again shortly.

Selling out?

image

I guess my twitter has grown big enough to attract local businesses. I’ve been getting tweets and Dms for me to come and check out their place of business. Most of the are local bars that’s near my home in downtown Austin, Texas. Other have been local dealerships about vehicles. At 3.2k followers on twitter I don’t feel like my sphere of influence is big enough to do these collaborations. Through my social media it’s easy to find out that I work for Texas University, and that may also be a factor.

Most of the offers is for me come in their place of work and do a “review” on my blog and shout them out a few times on Twitter. I’m conflicted, I’m currently planning to live in Austin for many years to come. I have a great job here at Texas University and I can really imagine myself working 30+ years here. I don’t want to get stuck in the situation where the company treat me, but the food/services is horrible. I would feel obligated to write a positive review about them because you usually get it for free, but I’m not going to lie or sugar coat something because I got it for free. Which may result in hostile tensions if I ever decided to try it again if it’s under the same management. It would be one thing for me to go to another city and do it because it would be highly unlikely for me to travel out the way to visit them. Also, I don’t want to review anything and they drag the University name all in it. It should be just like this blog. My thoughts are my own alone and do not reflect the views of anyone or anything beyond that fact.

I’m holding off on it for now and will probably never collaborate with a company in that manner. Until then I will continue to explore Austin with my friends and if I end up loving a place I will share it via my social media.

I’m no fool! Back to Grad school!

Hey everyone! I’m excited to tell you guys that im back in grad school. Since I’m working full time, I’m just only taking two classes. I should be able to maintain my social life. The plan is Friday nights and Saturdays will be dedicated to my social life. Back when I went to LSU, I attempted 18 credit hours of course work while trying to work and keep a girlfriend happy. Let’s just say I learned an important lesson on how to organize my time better and not to rush with getting to a goal.

The biggest reason for me going back is the people around me believing in me. Telling me I have the potential to get a PhD if I wanted too. That I may not feel like the brightest guy sometimes, but my work ethic is more than enough. The saying is true, if you surround yourself with great people, great things will happen. Thank you to all my co workers, family, friends and you guys for giving me the jolt I needed to continue.
